Teaching and Curriculum Development

Over the years, Dr Fariha Hayat Salman's research has explored the varied ways through which learners' conceptual understanding could be scaffolded by technology -in and across- formal and informal learning settings. Her most prominent research study titled, 'GreenDesigners' was supported by a research grant of US$50K from the Penn State's Center for Online Innovations in Learning. The study examined learner interactions by developing a tech-mediated, STEM experiential learning experience at the Penn State’s solar demonstration house.

In her teaching, research, and development efforts, Dr. Salman seeks to characterize learner interactions as a means to equip learners with meta-thinking/meta-design ability. Methodologically, she is trained in both quantitative and qualitative paradigms and her doctoral work illustrates her contribution to the microanalytical approaches of microethnography and multimodal interaction analysis.

Dr. Salman has more than 18 years of teaching, curriculum development, research, and leadership experience in the Higher Education (Pakistan, USA, and UK) and K-12 (USA) across the following broad disciplinary areas:

I. English Language Education (Pedagogy and Research)

  • Pennsylvania State University as Instructor, Advance Research Writing (2013-2014): Led the curriculum design, teaching, and grading of Advanced Research Writing courses for undergraduate students in the Science Education program. This included online asynchronous teaching that I designed and hosted on the Learning Management Platform, Canvas-Instructure and the e-authoring tool, Articulate™.

  • The Aga Khan University, Masters in Education (M.Ed.) Program: Senior Instructor (July 2006-August 2012): Thesis Supervisor: M.Ed. theses with focal research area in English Language Education (theory, practice, and pedagogy)

  • The Aga Khan University, Masters in Education (M.Ed.): Teaching specialization courses: TESOL for Multilingual  Classrooms, Learning Systems in ELT, Writing across the Disciplines (Academic Literacy), and Research in TESOL; Advance Diploma in ELT courses for specialized educators (e.g. Pakistan Air Force): Pedagogical Leadership; ED-LINKS English Resource Persons Program Specialist for capacity building of K-12 English teachers with partnership between USAID, American Institutes for Research (AIR) & Aga Khan University, Pakistan.

II. Continuing Education Business English

  • Birkbeck University of London, Sessional Lecturer (Sept-Dec, 2007) in the Continuing Education Department. Courses: Business English I and Business English II.

III. English Linguistics (Semantics/Sociolinguistics/Text Analysis)

  • University of Karachi, M.A (English Linguistics) Adjunct Faculty & Course Coordinator (2003-2004), Semantics and Sociolinguistics/Text Analysis.

Research Projects
Dr. Salman's research efforts include designing, studying, and problematizing complex learner interactions within technology-rich experiences such as  Girls in STEAM makerspaces (middle school students), Mystery tree trail at the Penn State arboretum (elementary school students), and GreenDesigners at the Penn State solar house (high school students). These studies draw upon sociocultural theories in the design and analysis of these deeply interactive learning experiences. The designs lend themselves to digital ethnography (also known as microethnography) that attends to  learners' interaction with the designed experience.
